A suburban animal hub

My suburban reality is an increasing number of electric poles and wires as surrounding homes get more of the electrically powered appliances – cars, stoves, hot water etc. A relatively recent addition is a mobile tower.

From my kitchen table, I see a blue sky criss-crossed with electric wires. The number of wires is starting to approach Delhi residential complexes. I feel a threat inching our way. If my courtyard sky clearance, which is at 30 degrees from vertical today, decreases any further, our deep sky photography from home will come to an end. Of course, we will always have the option to house the telescope at a distant telescope hotel, but that isn’t the same as having overhead photons land on your camera sensor.

That threat makes me sad at times, annoyed at other times. So I am starting to imagine these wires as an animal hub. A place for the birds to get together and share gossip or warm themselves in morning or evening sun. The squirrels always need corridors, to go safely from one garden to other, nibbling a plum here and an apple there.

The passion fruit vine on the fence is real, although it needs a serious trim. And so is the metal road runner.
