June bird sketches

This month I have mostly been sketching the loudest backyard bird. Half way through I decided to put a pair on a page, and where possible, a male and a female. With birds, the looks are very different based on sexes and putting them together helps me learn. I have been relying on Cornell for the reference images.

Dark-eyed junco, Jun 3
Black Phoebe, Jun 6
Mourning Dove, Jun 6. They seem to like sitting on the power lines.
A pair of house finches, Jun 11. The female of the pair ran into the freshly cleaned window on Jun 23 and was concussed for a couple of hours.
A pair of Anna’s hummingbirds, Jun 18. It seems that the feeder is attracting the young adults now.
Adult California Scrub-Jay, Jun 26. We saw one while sipping a macchiato at the Saint Frank Coffee shop in Menlo Park.
Black Phoebe, Jun 4
Dark-eyed junco, Jun 6
California Towhee, Jun 7. One was preening itself on the fence. It looked oh so fluffy!
Mourning Dove in rain, Jun 12. Not that it is raining now!
A pair of bushtits, Jun 20. They were playing hide and seek in the maple tree.
