The other day, I was listening to The Wild’s “Bird watching and listening with Libby Mills”. What stuck me is that Libby listens more than she watches. We live under a giant oak tree. It attracts a number of birds and I can only recognize the vocalization of Anna’s hummingbird and crow. Since Libby, I am on a quest to try and recognize my backyard birds – armed with the Merlin app. Merlin allows you to record and it does an instant recognition. So if you have overlapping vocalization, it can distinguish.

I am learning to draw birds and for subjects I lean towards well taken photographs. I lean more towards Californian birds but sometimes I pick an unfamiliar bird. Libby has inspired me to focus on my backyard birds, perhaps I will draw the most vocal.
