Spending our time untethering the mind, getting the fidgets out, exploring the in-between ideas, and learning kintsugi.

View of Himalayas in Lamayuru

View of Himalayas in Lamayuru

What was so special about this room? Firstly, it was at 11000 feet, with a picturesque view of Himalayan range. Secondly, the room was a lavatory with a porcelain toilet, in a part of the world where porcelain toilets are rare.

Two of us had arrived at Lamayuru, site of an eleventh century Buddhist monastry in Ladakh. We had been hitchhiking with truckers, or busing, along the Leh-Kargil highway, making our way from one village to next. I remember it was mid morning when we arrived and it was blindingly bright. The last forty minutes of the truck ride had been exhilarating and terrifying at the same time – narrow winding road, high mountain on one side and deep cliff on other.

Fish market

Fishmonger weighing his fish

A friend of mine used to say that a pukka Bengali gentleman, catches his fresh fish early every day. So particular is he about the freshness of fish, that after partaking his early morning cup of Darjeeling, he takes his plastic bag, dons his thong slippers, and goes for some fresh air exercise and sport – verbal combat with the hawkers at the neighborhood fish bazaar.

Truckking Ladakh

Truck ride in Ladakh

Truck ride in Ladakh

Truckking really, did you think I meant trekking?

Ladakh is the high mountain, I mean Himalayan, desert region on the eastern side of Kashmir. We lived in California then. We hiked 2000 foot mountains, several of them, for what seems like months now, hoping to trek the Himalayas. At 18000 ft in Leh, capital city of Ladkah region, we realized that there was no way we were going to breathe and walk at the same time. So, trekking was clearly out.

Two bridges on river Hooghly

Boats on Hooghly

During a recent sojourn in Kolkata, an unexpected rainstorm has me heading to the banks of Hooghly. Where else but Outram ghat, the most popular river front destination for Kolkata folks. Named after Sir James Outram, an English general in India during Sepoy Revolution (1857), Outram ghat was a key port during the reign of British empire. Now, Sir Outram rests in the annals of Britannica and the ghat is a place for myriads of daily activities – boating, hawkers selling fast food, commuting, couples murmuring sweet nothings, bisarjan of idols after the puja ceremonies, and of course – adda, chatting, the activity Kolkata natives are most famous for.

Desi Coke

with 2 comments

Coke may not reveal their formula, but so won’t we … of the Masala Coke that is. First, tandoori chicken pizza with raw onions and green chillies from Pizza Hut, and now coke with chaat masala added to it. Both marked improvements on the original products.

Daily Bread

leave a comment »

Found a bakery called Daily Bread on Church Street. It makes a bread flavored with curry leaf, cumin, and turmeric, called rather cheekily the Dakshin Housewife’s Loaf.

Got a whole wheat loaf from them, which I shall try for breakfast tomorrow. They also had the cutest little tart (of the food category) about the size of a one rupee coin. It was competent and bears further investigation. Tempting cakes and gelatos on display too. But I overcame my temptation and decided to be happy with the tart. I think I need some more happiness.

Sharmilas daughter

Sharmila's daughter

I ate a huge amount of biryani for lunch today. Till yesterday I was amazed at locals vacuuming up piles of rice for meals. Not any more.

I also noticed that I no longer hesitate at the curb when crossing a busy road. Like others trying to do the same, I assume that I have a reasonable stock of good karma and stare down auto-wallahs while standing in the middle of the road with vehicles whizzing by in front and back. So far I am alive with all my limbs intact, so my karma is holding, although I would not know if it were running out. Come to think of it, it is a poor user interface not to make the user aware of remaining karma. So true that God only thinks he is Steve Jobs.

I am using sms abbreviations like pls and thx. Oh dear. My only solace is I still shrink from gr8 and lol.

Don’t know why this photo is interesting, but it is. Incidentally, the woman in the photo in the photo is Sharmila Tagore’s daughter.

Coronation park

Coronation park

Brits left behind not only the railways, an education system design to mass produce petty bureaucrats, and cricket, but also a number of statues of king George V and others who bore the white man’s burden bravely. So what did we desis do to those statues after August 15, 1947? Why, we carefully arranged them on pedestals in the Coronation Park where old George had announced his coronation to the assembled flunkeys on Jun 22, 1911.

The little enclosure in Coronation Part with the statues is still maintained, after a fashion, by some little remembered part of the bureaucracy. The lawns are mowed, the trees are trimmed, the statues look in good repair … it was creepy.

Ugly because the ex-maharajas need 200 rupees of your money before they allow you to take photos of the exterior of the palace. And those little pretend battlements look pretty stupid too.
